Practical First Aid at Sea

Our November meeting of the Yachtie Ladies was attended by 19 ladies including 3 new members; we enjoyed a great practical session on First Aid at Sea. Hazel Wright, a CYC sailor who is also a retired Senior A&E nurse, discussed the most frequent accidents that we come across on the water- cuts, finger injuries, head injuries, burns and rope burns. She then demonstrated how to apply slings, head bandages and wound dressings before letting us loose! Most of us thought we knew how to apply a sling- using previous knowledge from Brownies or Girl Guides!!

Very quickly we discovered that it was not as easy as first thought and cries of “Hazel help!” soon rang out across the room. Lots of laughter wrapping volunteers with head bandages and getting to grips with tubular bandages for fingers!

It was a really good, fun filled, practical session which hopefully gave all of us more confidence in dealing with injuries whilst at the same time meeting new people and making new contacts within the group.
Many thanks to Hazel for not only giving us her time but handling the many questions with patience and humour. We all enjoyed it immensely.

Hazel will be coming back to the Club to give a talk on “How to provide First Aid at Sea” on Friday evening 22 February at 8.30. This is open to everyone not just the Ladies – it should be a worthwhile evening.

Our next Yachtie Ladies meeting will be arranged in Spring 2019- dates to be arranged soon.
