The Optimist Class has many enthusiastic members amongst the Junior members of Chichester Yacht Club. The Optimist is a great boat for youngsters to start sailing in. The Optimist is a very stable boat, and is perhaps the boat in which most children start their sailing career. Ben Ainslie sailed one for a number of years and competed in three World Championships!
We currently have a growing number of keen Optimist sailors at the club. The more experienced are now actively participating in fun racing at the club and a few open meetings whilst others are concentrating on honing their skills.
OPTIMIST TRAINING 2017
Our sessions, coached by RYA Dinghy Instructors, split the children into groups according to ability and provide a fun and challenging format to build confidence and improve skills at all levels.
Sailors joining the Oppie Group should have the ability to sail confidently around a triangular course in most weather conditions – anyone who has completed an RYA level 2 course should be at this level.
Beginners also have the opportunity to gain their RYA Stage 1, 2 & 3 through the CYC RYA programmes.
Optimist sailing starts in March and throughout the spring and summer regular Optimist training at weekends helps to improve boat handling, boat speed, develop race techniques and learn the racing rules. We also have a number of holiday camps during the season which will be a great way to get back on the water, refresh, progress or get a few races in. These will be an exciting mix of training, racing and fun water and shore based activities. Parents must remain on site and be responsible for their children during all the sessions and we actively encourage all parents to get involved!
