Ramble: Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve
For this year's birding walk on Valentines Day what better than a romantic stroll around Farlington Marshes Southsea! This lump of land projects into Langstone Harbour and is home to thousands of wintering birds
With a high tide at 0942 at the 'Deeps' there should be a good selection of ducks and waders and hopefully lots of wintering Geese. You may also get a glimpse of a Seal - these haul out at the far end on the falling tide.
The Marshes will look a lot different to last time we went two years ago. A break in the sea defences has meant that the reed beds have died with the ingress of salt water and although work is being done it will take some time so alas there will be no Bearded Tits (or Reedlings as they should be known for those of you that are keen followers of Countryfile!)
We are also visiting on a dropping tide - you will see a different aspect to the marsh and mudflats.
We will be joining the local RSPB group on this walk - there will be lots of people to answer your questions and chat too and telescopes to share. Do not forget your binoculars. Any pair will do.
Easy slow 4 mile walk. Can be very muddy. Birdwatching can be very cold - wrap up warm.
No loos - the odd bush. Carry lunch and a drink which will be taken Al Fresco!
If it's a lovely day and no wind - it is glorious there - if howling gale and lashings of rain - walk will be cancelled.
Take the A27 from Chichester (20 minute drive) to Farlington (13miles) turn off at Southsea, extreme left hand lane, and as you approach the traffic lights at end of slip road, go very slowly, signal left and very sharp left hand turn into car park under height restricted barrier. Meet in top car park (obvious). It will be noisy next to the A27 - it gets better - trust me it's worth it!
