CYC Europe & 200 open 18 July

19 competitors travelled from as far away as West Yorkshire and wales to take part in the CYC West Country Boat Repair Millennium series 2000 open and Europe Open.

The race officer Martin Orton prepared courses suitable for both classes with a windward mark towards dell quay. As the fleets gathered for the start the sea breeze arrived causing the course to be reversed. Unfortunately the sea breeze cancelled out the northerly and left a wind hole over the CYC lake. The first start was abandoned as the wind died across the course. Martin was determined to give the fleets some racing, so the team patiently waited for the breeze to settle, re-laying marks to account for the shifts.

After some delay the fleet got away for a race. The very competitive 2000 fleet had two general recalls before Martin used the black flag to deter further delays. Unfortunately one of the CYC boats was caught by the black flag drifting backwards across the line (some days nothing goes right).

The 2000 race saw some great skill from the sailors, watching the roll gybe of Simon and Katie horsfield was especially impressive as they maintained momentum in the light air. As they rounded the leeward mark for the last time it was Tristan and Sam Pascoe in the lead followed closely by Simon and Katie. Tristan, the youngest competitor by far, had a fantastic race guided by his dad as crew they held on for a well deserved win.

Sadly, the fickle wind continued for the rest of the afternoon. The race officer tried several times to get another race started, but each time the wind died. Finally the event was abandoned.

Back at the club house the prize giving saw Tristan and Sam Pascoe collect the 2000 trophy. Andy Palmer-Felgate won the Europe event, followed by CYCs Lucy Boreham.
