CYC Ramblers: East Dean 28 February
Published 11:28 on 14 Mar 2026
18 enthusiastic ramblers set out from the pretty village of East Dean in the South Downs National Park for 5 miles of fresh air and exercise.
After a short, moderately steep climb up into the forest we followed part of the West Sussex Literary Trail and other well-marked forest tracks. Mostly the ground underfoot was surprisingly firm and well-drained given the volume of rain we had experienced over the winter. Just one day before meteorological Spring, the rain held off and the sun managed to burst through the clouds for a time promising better weather to come.
On our return to the village we had lunch in the Star and Garter, a classic 18th century country pub. The food and service were good and as always the hospitality was welcoming and friendly.
