Ramble: Fields and Woods around West Marden 11th January

David briefs the eager walkers ; the Victoria Inn awaits our return.
It was a beautiful day with clear blue skies and no wind, but freezing cold.
A cold and frosty morning, great for walking.
The walk started uphill, which soon got everyone warmed. After that the way was easier across South Holt Wildlife Sanctuary, where the farmland is being allowed to rewild. It was then through the woods to St Huberts Church at Idsworth, where there was a welcome coffee break. Those who were interested went into the church to admire the Medieval wall paintings. The return walk had the only stile of the day and the last of the uphill.

There was a bit of delay when the tail marker challenged the leader as to which path to take, but it was resolved by referring to the map. The last mile was in the open with more far reaching views towards Compton and West Marden.
What a blue sky after all the grey we've hadWe arrived back at the pub in time for a well deserved lunch. The staff at the pub made us welcome and did a splendid job getting all the meals served with very little delay.
