Knots and Ropework Practice
Published 12:30 on 18 Jan 2026
A keen group of ladies, known as Women on the Water met for a practical session on Saturday morning to further their skills of tying knots, in preparation for the coming season.
Pat Purslow gave us a presentation of the most useful knots which we then practiced Bowlines, Clove Hitches, Figure of Eight, Round turn and two half hitches and even a method of sorting out a riding turn on a winch using a Rolling Hitch.
We tried lassoing a cleat, and when it wasnt raining went outside to see how far we could throw a throwing line. Coming alongside a pontoon: the importance of being prepared was discussed, with warps and fenders already attached both sides and the use of the centre cleat. Not forgetting good etiquette when rafting out, we were reminded how to attach a line to a cleat being used by other boats, to put on shore lines, and of course to respect our neighbours by crossing their yachts via the bow and doing so as quietly as possible.
A most enjoying morning we all learnt a lot! Everyone was given an illustrated hand out to take home, so there is no excuse for not knowing a few important knots just practice needed!
Woman on the Water is an informal group open to CYC ladies from all sections and new members are always welcome.
